Rating:
People are rating this latest iPod Touch with 1-3 stars because it has a sensor that is designed for 720p video as opposed to taking 5+ megapixel images like the iPhone 4.
How can something that is literally better in every way than the previous model (which had NO camera) only get 1 or even 2 stars?
Compared to the previous (and well loved) iPod Touch this device:
- replaces the previous processor with the more powerful A4 processor
- is thinner
- added a microphone so you don’t need a headset to talk to people or use voice control
- doubled the amount of ram so multi-tasking should be a breeze
- longer battery life
- weighs less
- TWO additional cameras (front facing for video and self-portraits and back for HD video)
- 4 times as many pixels on the screen
- adds the gyroscope for extra precision with motion based apps
Yes, I wanted the camera sensor from the iPhone 4 as well, but the unfortunate reality is that sensor wouldn’t fit in the old iPod Touch body and this one is even slimmer! In order to fit the iPhone 4 camera sensor into the iPod Touch, Apple would have had to make this device significantly thicker, which loses one of the big advantages the Touch has had over the iPhone, its size. I might have been willing to make the tradeoff, but obviously Apple wasn’t.
Keep in mind that the larger sensor (and LED Flash) adds to the cost of the device as well. Apple added a significant number of features to the iPod Touch and kept the price exactly the same. Something’s gotta give here. The 32GB iPhone 4 sells for $700! (AT&T pays Apple the difference when you buy one on contract). I’m sure if people were willing to spend $400 more than the $299 the 32GB iPod Touch sells for they would have a mind blowing sensor in there. I’m actually surprised at how much of the functionality of the iPhone the iPod Touch now replicates, given the huge gap in cost.
Appreciate the fact that you can now record HD video and do video calling over WiFi for the same price as the last model. Or don’t buy it. But don’t rate something you’ve never touched 1 star because the sensor was not designed to be used as a still photo camera. Neither was the sensor on the pocket sized Flip Video Camera and people spend $100+ on that device even though it does NOTHING ELSE.

OK, folks, this will be my first Amazon review, though I’ve bought countless other things from the site. My 64GB G4 is on order, and I’ll update my review after I’ve had some time to play with it.
Whereas I agree that the rear facing camera is not what I was expecting, I have to say that the overall improvements from the previous generation are spectacular!
I would rate the previous 32GB G3 Touch at 6 stars if I could. And here’s why.
The screen is awesome.
Great battery life.
Barely noticeable in your pocket.
It’s a book reader (get Stanza)
Surfs the internet
Hold my full CD Library (350 of `em)
Plays Movies
Does Email well.
Holds all of your family photos.
Reads PDF files.
Store and edit MS Office files with QuickOffice.
Does calendaring well.
Games are awesome.
Supports Telnet, RDP and VNC for my job.
Quick access to weather
Very nice Maps Calculator, Alarm Clock, et. al.
To me it seems to do just about everything!
Now comes the G4 Touch. What are you really getting with the upgrade? Well, from a hardware standpoint, I’ve noticed the following improvements from the G3 model….
256MB Ram becomes 512MB
ARM Cortex-A8 833 MHz (600MHz) CPU becomes 1GHz (800Mhz) with same GPU
L1 cache 64 KB (was 32KB)
480×320 screen becomes Retina 960×640
LED screen Lighting
Added 802.11n support
Gyroscope added
Front facing 640×480 camera added
Rear facing 1280×720 camera added (960×720 stills for 4:3 aspect)
Battery life increased by 33%
Microphone added
Photo exposure sensor added
Thickness reduced by 20% (1.6mm)
Weight reduced by 12% (14g)
To me, this is a rather impressive list of improvements on an already mind-numbingly cool product. Yeah, I wish the camera was 3+ Megapixels, but truthfully, I mostly just look that the photos that take, but rarely want to print them out anyway, so this is not a deal-breaker. With the G4, I’ll now be able to add the following to my list of things that I can do with my iPod….
Record 720p video.
Make video calls (cool, but we’ll see if I use it)
Edit my Video.
Take photographs.
Record audio without digging out my headphones. (Finally)
View photos and movies that look like photos, instead of pixels.
Use it longer before recharging.
In summary, I believe that an iPod touch is something you buy, love intensely for a year, then throw away in favor of the new model. (That is, if you can afford to do so). I’m upgrading my 32GB G3 to a 64GB G4 to hold more games and home movies, mainly. The Retina display alone would have been reason enough for me to upgrade. With the impressive list of upgrades above, it made the choice very easy for me.
I won’t complain that the digital camera that’s built into my high-def camcorder isn’t as nice as it could have been. (But I won’t begrudge anyone for doing so themselves — this is a free country that we live in!)
ps. Maybe the G5 will have GPS…. It’d be nice to replace my Magellan and TomTom with and iPod.

My wife and I have the 3rd generation iPod Touch and are very happy with them. The one thing that I have been missing/wanting is having a built in camera. I recently saw the photos taken by a friend’s iPhone and was blown away by how good they were. Almost all reviews have said the iPhone built in 5MP camera is excellent. Like many others I watched Steve Jobs present the new iPod line today and was very excited to hear that it had all the features I was looking for. Retina display – awesome. Front and rear cameras – yes! Finally.
I was all set to order 2 from Amazon the minute Amazon had them listed. But .. while looking thru the Apple website I came across the specs for the rear facing camera. It is only .7 megapixels. Less than 1 megapixel. What? I thought that can’t be right. I contacted Apple and the rep, who had gotten many such calls it seemed, confirmed that the iPod touch has a very different camera (.7 MP vs the iPhone’s 5 MP) . Bummer. I looked around and found a hands on review of it …. and they said the sensor itself, besides being lower MP, is also not nearly as good as the one in the iPhone. Not terrible but certainly not good and no where in the same league as the one in the iPhone.
The camera was one of the 2 main things people asked for. The other being the Retina display. My assumption is that Apple didn’t want to affect iPhone sales and purposely dummied down the camera. Shame on them. They want us to pay $240 to $400 for an iPod with a terrible camera.
I first predicted that w/ the Retina display and the camera that this would be a smashing success, a huge seller coming into the holiday season. I suspect when people get them and see how bad the photos are, they’ll be returning them to Apple. Or like myself, not upgrading.
I realize this review should be for a product I own, but I felt it was important for people to know about the camera before they ordered it. If photos aren’t a big deal, and you’ll only email them or post them on facebook, then .7 MP is probably fine. If you want to print any of the photos you take, or even have room to crop the photo, you won’t get enough resolution to do that.
That being said, the Retina display does look awesome, but is it worth the extra dollars over the price of the 3G model? Only you can decide that.
I hope this helps all of you make a wise decision about your purchase.

Before i start reviewing the ipod touch 4G you need to know that the camera is absolutely horrible for still shots, it can only take 0.7MP Pictures (YES less than 1MP!), you can check this fact yourself by going to apple official website, you will find this info under official Specs, the ipod touch camera is meant for video not still shots, for video it’s as good as flip cameras.
I got the top rated ipod touch 3G review in amazon so i suggest that you read it if you want to learn more about the ipod touch in general (You can check it by clicking on my profile) So knowing all that many people are wondering is it worth it to upgrade from 3G to 4G? new users are wondering if they should get the 3G now since it’s cheaper after the 4G introduction?
So the question is what is new with the ipod touch 4G? only you can decide if it’s worth it for you or not.
1- The ipod touch 4g got a faster processor (Only noticed if you multitask a lot really)
2- Double the ram 512MB which is great for multitasking and the new OS 4.0 (3G got 256MB ram only)
3- 2 Cameras for video/stills and FaceTime video chat (cameras are horrible for still shots, decent for video)
4- HD video recording and playback
5- Higher resolution screen (Awesome for browsing, you will never go back to 3G screen after trying it!)
6- Improved Battery life 40Hours for audio playback with the 4G (3G got only 30Hours audio playback)
7- It’s lighter, thinner and narrower (better to hold in your hands, specially if you got a small hands like me)
8- Built in Microphone ! (Ipod touch 3g microphone is combined with the headphones and NOT built into the ipod)
9- Three-axis gyro (Some apps and games use it)
Pros:
-Slick,small and light device
-Great high resolution touch screen
-The BEST web browser on a portable device
-Amazing video/music playback
-App Store (Too many cool applications for Free)
-Display screen is clear and bright
-No bugs and annoying stuff a very reliable hardware
-64GB Flash based mp3 player
Cons:
1-The camera is horrible for still images
2-There is still no real FM radio built in (Internet radio is available though)
3-Bluetooth is still locked for sharing
My top 3 music Apps:
1-TuneWiki (Play lyrics for every song you play)
2-Pandora Radio (Play music by almost any artist free!)
3-Shazam (record Any song via your microphone then play it and Shazam will tell you the name of the song !)
Would have gotten 5 Stars from me if it were not for the horrible Camera, many people will be disappointed with it, i hope you guys liked my review, it will be updated soon !

Why are so many people writing reviews for a product that they haven’t touched. What the…
I have to say one major thing. Several reviewers state that the new Touch has 512MB of RAM. This has never been stated publicly by Apple, and it is NOT on the website. No one with Apple has ever mentioned this. It may have 512MB or it may have 256MB or 1GB or 128GB, who knows. Apple has not published it yet. So if your someone who isn’t a rabid Apple fan boy like me. All you want is the truth, not RUMOR. You are gonna have to wait until Apple decides to release the specs on this very cool device.
By the way I LOVE iPod Touch. I ordered one an hour after Steve Jobs finished his show Sept. 1. I’m no Apple basher. I’m a RUMOR basher.
Seriously, fan boys. Why do you feel the need to protect Apple like this. It makes you look like MORONS. Kinda like the Ditto Heads of Rush LimBAG.
Truth > Rumor.
Edit: I changed my review to 3 stars. It seems more fair since I haven’t gotten my iPod Touch 4 yet. Honestly, I’d rather not put a star rating on it yet.
Basically, I wanted to make the point about 512MB of RAM. See Above.
Thanks.
